Which is the most profitable crop to grow on 1 acre in Kenya?
The answer may surprise you.
In this video, we rank 8 cash crops based on what an acre can actually make as a smallholder business — not simply by the biggest revenue number.
We compare cabbage, Irish potatoes, tomatoes, capsicum, sukuma wiki, Swiss chard (spinach), bananas and managu (African nightshade) using five questions that matter when real money is on the line:
• How much capital do you need before the first sale?
• How quickly can the farm start bringing cash back?
• Can you harvest once, or keep harvesting?
• What can destroy your profit — disease, weather, labour or falling prices?
• Does the crop still make business sense on one acre?
You’ll see why a crop that can generate KSh 1 million in sales can still be a weaker business than a crop generating less revenue — if the first crop requires more capital, takes longer to pay back or exposes you to greater market risk.
We also look at the difference between big harvest revenue and reliable farm cash flow, including why sukuma wiki, Swiss chard and managu move higher in the ranking.
The 8 crops ranked:
8. Cabbage
9. Irish potatoes
10. Tomatoes
11. Capsicum
12. Sukuma wiki
13. Swiss chard / spinach
14. Bananas
15. Managu / African nightshade
But there is an important warning: there is no universally most profitable crop.
Prices, yields, production costs and profitability can change significantly depending on your county, season, variety, water, management, labour and market.
So use this ranking as a business-planning framework, not a guaranteed profit figure.
If you're deciding what to plant on your next acre, this video will help you think beyond “Which crop sells for the highest price?” and start asking the question that matters more:
Which crop fits the money, water, labour, market and time I actually have?
