Britcar doesn't let go easily.
Twenty four hours in a car that never quite fit. A circuit that never once made it easy. P4 at the flag, top split, and a week just to feel human again afterward. We'll take it. We earned every part of it.
While I was still racing, something else happened without me.
Round 1 of Season 4 ran. A grid formed somewhere I wasn't. A result got written into the standings, permanent now, and I had no hand in shaping it. The season doesn't wait to see if you're ready. It never has.
Road Atlanta. Round 2.
Braselton, Georgia. Built on farmland in 1969, first race run in 1970, and every year since has added another name to a list of drivers who thought they understood the esses before the esses corrected them. Twelve turns and a downhill dive at the final one that has been catching people out for over half a century.
Normally this weekend belongs to John74 and me. Petit Le Mans. Ten hours we've shared every year this event has run, since i started the on the service, one of the crown jewels of endurance racing on that side of the Atlantic. Not this year. A twenty four hour race one weekend before a ten hour one was never going to work, and there's no getting around the honesty of that. It stings. I enjoy that event.
But Road Atlanta is still Road Atlanta.
Three hours in the Simucube Endurance instead, and something old comes back out of the garage to meet it.
The car meeting all of this is the Corvette.
Mid engined, naturally aspirated, V8 that sounds like nothing else on the grid. It rotates more freely than most GT3 machinery, agile through the fast stuff, but that same looseness turns unforgiving the moment patience runs out in the slow corners. The same car that was there before any of this had a name. Unrefined next to everything since, asking to be driven the way it wants to be driven, punishing anyone who forgets that halfway through a corner.
The season goal hasn't changed just because I missed the start of it.
Finish with a higher iRating than we started with. But the number is never really the point. Numbers are just numbers. The real aim is quieter than that, and heavier: to end this season feeling like we actually belong in the top split, the place we already spend most of our time now, without the imposter's doubt that's followed every result that's landed us there.
Underneath all of it lives a question I can't silence.
Not about the missed round, or John's absence. The question sits deeper than any of that.
Not the car. The Corvette knows exactly what it is. Not the goal. Higher iRating, top split, simple enough to state. The question is about the driver walking into Road Atlanta already a round behind, carrying Britcar in his shoulders, wondering whether presence still means anything once a season has already proven it can move without yours, and whether belonging is even something you can chase when you started a step behind everyone chasing it with you.
Some doubts you reason through. This one you only answer by driving.
So that's what we're doing.
Round 2. Road Atlanta. A circuit that's been correcting drivers since 1970. The Corvette, old and unrefined, meeting a season that started without asking, and a goal that hasn't gotten any smaller just because the start line moved without me on it.
Road Atlanta doesn't care that we're behind.
It only cares what we do about it.
