Join us for the fifth video in our July Motorhome adventure as we travel from York to the beautiful market town of Pickering, staying at the Mount Terrace Camping and Caravanning Club Certified Site (CS)—one of the closest campsites to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). Our main reason for visiting? To see the magnificent steam locomotive Tornado in action! Built by the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, 60163 Tornado is Britain's first brand-new main line steam locomotive to be built since the 1960s. Completed in 2008 after nearly two decades of construction, Tornado is a modern recreation of the legendary LNER Peppercorn Class A1 locomotives and has become one of the country's most famous steam engines. During our stay we're lucky enough to film Tornado several times from different locations around Pickering, giving you some fantastic views of this incredible locomotive in action. It's not just steam either! We also capture several preserved diesel locomotives, including two Class 37s and a Class 31, making this a great visit for railway enthusiasts of all kinds. Although Mount Terrace is a very small five-van Certified Site with only basic facilities, its location is superb for exploring Pickering on foot. We take a leisurely walk around the wonderfully preserved Pickering Station, sharing some of the history of this beautiful heritage railway before visiting the fascinating Church of St Peter and St Paul, home to one of Britain's finest collections of rare 15th-century medieval wall paintings. Finally, we review the campsite, discuss the facilities (and limitations), reveal exactly what it costs to stay, and compare it with nearby alternatives—including the official North Yorkshire Moors Railway motorhome overnight parking. If you're planning a Motorhome, Campervan or Caravan trip to North Yorkshire, love heritage railways, or simply enjoy steam trains and historic places, we hope this video helps you plan your own visit.
