Multiple integrals allow us to calculate areas, volumes, and other quantities in multidimensional spaces, extending the concept of integration to functions of several variables. What are multiple integrals?: Multiple integrals generalize the definite integral to functions of two or more variables. They are mainly classified as follows: Double integrals: applied to functions of two variables 𝑓(𝑥,𝑦), they allow us to calculate the volume under a surface in a region of the 𝑥𝑦-plane. Triple integrals: applied to functions of three variables 𝑓(𝑥,𝑦,𝑧), they allow us to calculate the volume (three-dimensional volume) of a region in space. Beyond three variables, we speak of n-multiple integrals, useful in contexts such as statistical physics or functional analysis. Geometric Interpretation: A single integral represents the area under a curve. A double integral represents the volume under a surface over a region in the plane. A triple integral represents the volume of a three-dimensional region. For example, if 𝑓(𝑥,𝑦)≥0 in a region 𝑅⊂𝑅^2, then: ∬𝑓(𝑥,𝑦) 𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦 over the region 𝑅, represents the volume between the surface 𝑧=𝑓(𝑥,𝑦) and the 𝑥𝑦-plane. Applications: Physics: calculation of mass, center of mass, moment of inertia. Engineering: load distribution, heat flow. Probability: joint density functions. Geometry: areas and volumes of complex regions.
