Why are there no computers in Dune? Why did Dune ban thinking machines and turn humans into computers: the Mentats? The answer from Frank Herbert's books, Carl Jung and Nietzsche, before Dune: Part Three opens on December 18. In Part One, Paul keeps his hand in the box of pain while an old woman in black watches. In the book, the conversation that follows is about machines, and the films never show it. The Archives reads the commandment against thinking machines three times (what it bans, what it protects, and what it never says) and asks who ends up doing the thinking in a universe with no computers. If a tool offered to do your thinking for you, who would you want holding it? Tell us in the comments. Related: Duncan Idaho Died for Paul.
