This journey follows regional roads through peaceful villages, green countryside, fishponds and historic towns, offering a glimpse into the quieter side of the Czech countryside. Jindřichův Hradec – A Historic Beginning Our journey begins in Jindřichův Hradec, a historic town beside the Nežárka River and Vajgar Pond. The town is famous for its impressive castle and château complex, which combines medieval origins with Renaissance architecture. Vajgar Pond is one of its most recognisable landmarks and reflects the importance of water in the region’s history. Route 34 and Horní Žďár Leaving Jindřichův Hradec, we follow Route 34 through the South Bohemian countryside. The road passes rural settlements, cultivated fields and wooded areas. Horní Žďár is one of the small communities along the route, surrounded by the peaceful landscapes typical of this part of the Czech Republic. Lásenice and Lásenický stav We continue towards Lásenice, a village associated with the Nežárka River and the surrounding countryside. The area is characterised by green landscapes, forests and traditional fishponds. Nearby Lásenický stav adds to the region’s distinctive waterside scenery. South Bohemia is particularly famous for its historic fish-farming tradition, with ponds that have shaped the local environment and economy for centuries. Mláka and Stará Hlína The drive continues through Mláka and Stará Hlína, small settlements in the Třeboň region. This area is known for its extensive pond systems, wetlands, forests and agricultural land. The landscape offers a quiet rural atmosphere, with villages connected by local roads through the South Bohemian countryside. Třeboň – The Land of Fishponds At approximately 27 minutes, we reach Třeboň, one of the region’s most attractive historic towns. Its centre features a traditional square, historic houses and a château. The surrounding Třeboň Basin is famous for its fishponds, wetlands and rich natural environment. Fish farming has been an important local tradition for centuries, making the ponds an essential part of the region’s identity. The combination of historic architecture and waterside landscapes makes Třeboň a memorable stop along this journey. České Budějovice – The Regional Capital Continuing northwest, we approach České Budějovice, the largest city in South Bohemia. Founded in the thirteenth century, the city is known for its historic centre and the impressive Přemysl Otakar II Square, one of the largest town squares in the Czech Republic. Elegant historic buildings, arcades and the city’s long brewing tradition contribute to its cultural importance. The transition from rural villages to the regional capital provides a different perspective on South Bohemia, combining traditional countryside with urban history. Jaronice – The Final Destination After passing České Budějovice, we continue towards Jaronice, a small settlement surrounded by the countryside of South Bohemia. Here, the journey concludes among rural communities, open fields and the peaceful landscapes that make exploring the Czech Republic by local roads so rewarding. This drive offers a varied look at South Bohemia, from historic towns and traditional villages to fishponds, forests and agricultural landscapes. Rather than rushing along major highways, we travel at a natural pace and enjoy the scenery and everyday life of the region. Thank you for joining me on this journey through the Czech Republic.
