How many serial killers are active in the United States right now? You’ve probably heard the famous estimate: 25 to 50. But when you actually trace that number back to its source, things get complicated very quickly. Ed Kemper once guessed there were “far more than 35.” Former FBI profiler John Douglas estimated 25 to 50. One estimate discussed by the National Institute of Justice suggests there could have been as many as 2,000 serial killers who were never prosecuted, while a statistical model estimating killers who died without ever being caught lands at roughly seven. So... which number is right? The problem is that almost none of these numbers are actually measuring the same thing. In this episode of Breakfast Serial, we look at what “active serial killer” actually means, where the famous 25–50 estimate came from, how killers like Jeffrey Dahmer, Robert Rhoades and Samuel Little operated without police initially realizing there was a connected series, and why it may be mathematically impossible to know exactly how many serial killers are operating right now. We’ll also look at the enormous pool of unresolved American homicides, missing-person cases and unidentified remains, along with research attempting to estimate just how many repeat killers may have escaped detection entirely. Because the scariest active serial killer might not be somebody police are hunting. It might be somebody nobody realizes they should be looking for yet. Give me your number in the comments: How many serial killers do you think are active in the United States right now? And do you think there is a current series of murders happening somewhere in North America that investigators haven’t connected yet?
