Daedalus was the most cunning craftsman in the Greek world, the man who built the labyrinth of Crete to hold the Minotaur, and the man King Minos then locked in a tower for helping an enemy escape it. With every road and ship out of Crete sealed, Daedalus looked to the one thing no king had ever thought to guard: the open sky. He built two pairs of wings from feathers and wax, and gave his son Icarus one instruction before they flew, an instruction the boy could not quite bring himself to keep. This is the full myth of Daedalus and Icarus: the labyrinth, Ariadne's thread, the tower, the wings, the warning, the joy of flight, and the fall that gave an island its name.
