Coaching institutes have opened their Prelims batches, and the message is that now is the right time to start Prelims. Is it? Prelims is 400 marks and only qualifying. Mains is 1,750 marks and far more predictable. Between Prelims and Mains 2027 you get about 89 days (23 May to 20 August), and some of those go in rest and in waiting for the result. If November to January also goes to Prelims, when does Mains get prepared?
In this video: why we feel the urge to start Prelims early (the coaching market, and our own fear), why long preparation is not the same as the right preparation, the three pillars of Prelims (the non-negotiables, the questions you can leave, and UPSC sense, built by reading PYQs as one more subject), real UPSC 2026 questions for each, and what to do from now till January: Ethics and the optional first, then the static topics that carry the most marks, with short thematic Mains notes.
Abhimanyu Kumar: UPSC Interview, B.Tech CS (IIT Delhi), BPSC Rank 51 (cleared 3/3 times).
