Redoubt Lake- Tongass National Forest, Alaska (a Visual Essay)

During the summer of 2021, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a Fishery Technician for the U.S. Forest Service (‪@usdaForestService‬ ) through the Student Conservation Association at a remote fish weir on Redoubt Lake. Redoubt Lake is a meromictic lake located about 12 miles south of Sitka, Alaska in a glacially-carved valley in the Tongass National Forest and is one of the largest subsistence sockeye fisheries in Southeast Alaska. The U.S. Forest service maintains the weir system to count and record the salmon entering the lake which then allows the Alaska Department of Fish & Game to make management decisions based on the data collected daily as well as each season (Sitka Conservation Society). In this video you will be able to see parts of the salmon run as well as the wildlife that frequent the weir. This past season we were lucky enough to have a sow and cubs (brown bears) visit the weir daily to fish for salmon in addition to numerous bald eagles.
