IN THE BOOK: This recording is from the late 1990s, when Arun sang at his home for an audience of one: the much younger, Yogesh Jahagirdar, who was also the table player. Yogesh, who lived in the same locality, often went over to accompany Arun, who often pull out all the stops. Yogesh’s wife Madhavi learnt from Arun, and the couple got to hear some sparkling renditions by the musician, as described in Chapter 13’s second section, ‘Beauty 1998-2000’. ‘I don’t know how Arun Kaka fires on all cylinders even when there are no listeners,’ Yogesh often thought, as quoted in the chapter.
