Just as wireless networking let emerging markets leapfrog the developed world a generation ago, new technologies promise to level the playing field even further. Brazil used app-based onboarding and digital deposits to distribute Covid-19 aid, reaching a stunning 56% of the population. India’s aspirations are vastly more ambitious: giving internet access to 1.4 billion people and migrating all governmental and financial services to digital platforms. If digitization really can power a step change in productivity, are trade-offs such as privacy and cybersecurity an acceptable price to pay?
