Battling the elemental and chaotic, the grand brushstrokes in Zao Wou-Ki's ‘22.6.63’ and ‘24.10.63’ reflect his desire to paint the invisible. He deploys the calligraphic method of feibai (‘flying white’), where a brush, traditionally steeped in ink, is smudged across silk in order to create a sense of flight. These two works from his Hurricane Period, considered by many to be the apex of his extraordinary career, will be offered in our 20th Century & Contemporary Art Evening Sale in Hong Kong on 8 July 2020.
