In Des Moines, Iowa, trick-or-treaters often get asked a question before the candy comes out: "What's your joke?" Why would a treat need a punchline? The answer goes back to the destructive Halloween pranks of the late 1930s, a city recreation superintendent named Kathryn Krieg, and a campaign that turned the "trick" into something the neighbors would actually enjoy.

The doorstep scene and the ghost joke are an illustrative re-enactment, not a recorded event. Accounts give different years for the first Beggars' Night (1938, 1939 and 1941 all appear), so the video describes it as a response that took shape in the late 1930s. The decline in vandalism by the mid-1940s is the city's later account, not a measured study. Des Moines is not the only place with a Halloween joke tradition; St. Louis has one too.
