Before the World Cup became the biggest sporting tournament on Earth, it was only an idea. In 1928, FIFA approved the creation of a separate world championship. Six nations showed interest in hosting the historic first tournament — but as Europe hesitated, one country stepped forward. Uruguay. The tiny South American nation had already conquered Olympic football twice. Now it wanted to host the first FIFA World Cup. But getting there would be anything but easy. Teams had to cross the Atlantic by ship. The tournament stadium was being constructed under enormous pressure. Only 13 nations ultimately made the journey to Montevideo. And on July 30, 1930, Uruguay faced Argentina in a final that would create football history forever. Uruguay won 4–2. The first World Cup had its first champion. This is the story of the tournament that started it all.
