Every day, in the heart of London's financial district, a 200-year-old bell rings — once for bad news about ships, twice for good.
On October 9, 1799, the warship HMS Lutine sank off the Dutch coast carrying gold and silver worth roughly £1.2 million — about £100 million today. Two hundred and forty men died. Only one didn't.
No record says who he was. No name, no age, no rank, and no trace of what happened to him afterward.
Thirty-five years later, in the hand of a dying man, a piece of gold from the wreck resurfaces — along with a question no one has been able to answer since: how did it get there, and what really happened the night the ship went down?
Let us know in the comments what you think really happened that night.
