Job 9–10 takes us deeper into Job’s struggle to understand his suffering. Job has listened to Eliphaz. He has listened to Bildad. Both friends have insisted that God is just. Job agrees. He knows God is powerful. He knows God is wise. He knows no human being can stand before God as an equal. But that creates another problem in Job’s mind. How can a weak human being bring his case before the Almighty? How can Job speak to God when God is infinitely greater than he is? How can a sinful human being ever make himself completely clean before a holy God? Then Job says something remarkable. He wishes there were someone who could stand between him and God— someone who could reach both sides. Job does not yet possess the fuller revelation given in the New Testament. But the Gospel eventually answers that longing in Jesus Christ: “For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” — 1 Timothy 2:5, NKJV Chapter 10 then becomes intensely personal. Job speaks directly to God. He asks why he was created if his life would contain such suffering. He remembers that God formed him. God gave him life. God showed him favor. Yet now Job feels confused by what God has allowed. These chapters teach us that we can acknowledge God’s greatness while admitting our confusion, that human effort cannot make us righteous before a holy God, that suffering can raise difficult questions, and that humanity ultimately needs a Mediator.
