On the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, motorcycles aren't merely a mode of transport—they are a force of nature, a veritable natural disaster. Like an ceaseless waterfall, they cascade down from every direction. Standing on the roadside, I felt like a tiny ant attempting to cross a raging torrent—insignificant, helpless, and liable to be swept away at any moment. Had a security guard not taken pity on me and stepped in to help, I likely would have spent half an hour stranded on the curb, unable to even make it to the other side of the street; the traffic here is truly a heart-pounding experience! Next, I plunged into the War Remnants Museum, where the atmosphere instantly shifted, becoming solemn and heavy. The legacy left behind by the U.S. military is nothing short of heinous—not "freedom," but Agent Orange. This large-scale chemical weapon has condemned four generations of Vietnamese people—spanning two centuries—to the nightmare of children born with severe deformities. I could not bring myself to photograph those images; I dare not describe them, nor can I recount them in detail, for fear of giving you nightmares. The mirror of history does not lie; those crimes are clearly documented. The memories of the past have not been forgotten—nor should they ever be. I left the museum with a complex mix of emotions. This particular stop offered no room for levity—only silence. I had originally planned to stroll through Independence Park and stop by the cathedral on the way, but it turned out the building was under renovation; the gates were firmly shut, leaving me to gaze across the street in wistful disappointment.I headed over to the Lotte Center to grab a bite; the rooftop garden there offered a welcome moment of solace. The vantage point was superb; looking down from above, the cathedral—currently under renovation—possessed a unique charm of its own. It was an unexpected bonus that helped soothe the disappointment of not being able to enter the church itself. The Central Post Office and Book Street, however, were absolutely teeming with people—and the air conditioning seemed to be on the fritz. It was hot and cramped, feeling more like a sauna than a tourist attraction, and the atmosphere was so heavily commercialized it felt stifling. I walked around for a bit but quickly lost interest—what a drag! I made a decisive retreat. As dusk fell, I hopped onto a sightseeing bus to embark on an architectural tour of Ho Chi Minh City’s downtown area. The city’s famous landmarks took on a distinct charm under the glow of the setting sun. I finally managed to capture a time-lapse video—no dodging motorcycles, no battling through crowds—just quietly documenting the city as it breathed. As night fell, I set out for a casual stroll and, quite by accident, wandered deep into the narrow alleys of a residential neighborhood. Little did I know, I was about to stumble upon a delightful "mystery box" of culinary surprises! I discovered authentic local delicacies that were so delicious I simply couldn't put my chopsticks down. The prices were even more astounding—a mere one-fifth of what you’d pay in the tourist zones. The value for money was absolutely off the charts! My main meal left me craving just a little more, so I made a quick stop to check out a famous local dessert chain as well. It had been a day of eating and exploring in Ho Chi Minh City—one filled with cold sweats from dodging motorcycles, moments of being weighed down by the city's heavy history, and times of questioning my life choices while being crushed in tourist crowds. It was a day of both scares and surprises, of gravity and joy. Isn't that, after all, the true essence of travel—never knowing whether the very next second will bring a shock or a delight? What other wondrous stories await later in my journey through Vietnam? Stay tuned...
