The Miller Precision Ranger 9i is here — and this ported island barrel 2011 came out swinging. Miller Precision has been on an absolute roll with the Ranger lineup, and after recently running the Ranger 9X, 9C, 9SC, and the Kovert X Miller, I wanted to see how their newest release stacked up against some of the other pistols I’ve tested. The Ranger 9i is Miller Precision’s take on the ported island barrel concept, and on its first real range session it immediately started putting up serious numbers. In this video, I run the Ranger 9i through Bill Drills, High Five, Mozambique drills, reloads, and the MSP Black Belt Standard to see how it performs under speed. Results included: • New High Five PR — beating the previous 4.55 record held by the Covert X RCD Mod 2 and Torch Tactical • New Mozambique PR — 1.21 seconds • Sub-second 1R1 reload • 1.23 empty-gun 1R1 • Low-1.3-second 1R3 reloads • MSP Black Belt Standard PASS • 1.56 on the 3-yard 3-to-body / 2-to-head string • 0.67 draw at 7 yards • 1.83 Bill Drill • 1.21 at 25 yards The Ranger 9i is fast, accurate, aggressively textured, and uses Miller Precision’s unique operating system rather than a traditional 2011 setup. My only real question mark is the recoil spring system. Miller uses a variable-pitch, variable-diameter spring, and when I pushed the gun extremely hard I occasionally found myself chasing the timing. I’d love to experiment with different spring options to see just how far this pistol can be pushed. Outside of that, the Ranger 9i is an absolute monster. When you combine this level of performance with Miller Precision’s pricing, the Ranger lineup occupies a very interesting position in the high-end double-stack 1911 / 2011 market. If you’re considering a Miller Precision Ranger 9i, ported island barrel 2011, competition 2011, or premium double-stack 1911, this video should give you a good idea of what the gun is capable of. Comment below and let me know what you think of the Ranger 9i — and what pistol you want to see it go head-to-head against. Please LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE, and SUBSCRIBE.
