Time to build a shop-made knurling tool! In Part 1, I’m turning scrap stainless steel into a pinch-style knurling tool for the lathe, with the goal of handling harder materials than my push-style tool.
This build starts with an angle grinder and some work-hardened stainless. From there, it’s cutting, milling, squaring up the pieces, welding the main body, and machining the welded assembly flat and true.
No detailed plans here—just working around the knurling wheels and figuring out the rest as I go. Making tools from scrap saves material costs, but you definitely trade some time for it!
Part 2 will cover shaping the arms, fitting the wheels, and finishing the pivot and adjustment.
Got a better way to hold or machine this welded piece? Leave a comment—I’d like to hear your ideas.
