How did Israel’s Iron Dome become one of the most recognizable missile defense systems in the world? From the rocket attacks that drove its development to its first combat interception, the wars in Gaza, American funding, and the arrival of laser-based defense, this documentary explores the entire history of Israel’s Iron Dome. Iron Dome was developed in Israel to counter short-range rocket threats and became operational in 2011. But the system is far more complex than simply launching a missile at another missile. Its radar detects incoming threats. Its battle-management system estimates their trajectory. And when a projectile is assessed as threatening a defended area, a Tamir interceptor can be launched to stop it in the air. But Iron Dome’s story goes far beyond the technology itself. In this documentary, we explore: • Why Israel decided to develop Iron Dome • The impact of the 2006 Israel–Hezbollah war • How Rafael developed the system • How Iron Dome detects and intercepts incoming rockets • Its first successful combat interception in 2011 • Iron Dome during the 2012 and 2014 Gaza conflicts • The massive rocket barrages of May 2021 • Iron Dome’s role following October 7, 2023 • The limitations of missile-defense systems • The United States’ funding and industrial partnership with Israel • The U.S. Army’s acquisition of Iron Dome batteries • C-Dome and the evolution of the Iron Dome family • David’s Sling and the Arrow missile-defense systems • Israel’s Iron Beam laser defense system • The 2026 Iron Dome upgrade tests • And what the future of missile defense could look like Iron Dome eventually became part of a much larger layered Israeli air-defense network. While Iron Dome primarily addresses shorter-range threats, other systems provide additional defensive layers. The story also became deeply connected with the United States. U.S. support for Iron Dome began in FY2011, and in 2014 the United States and Israel signed a co-production agreement allowing components of the system to be manufactured in the United States. The technology has continued to evolve. In December 2025, Israel’s Ministry of Defense and Rafael announced the delivery of the first operational Iron Beam high-power laser system to the Israel Defense Forces. Iron Beam is intended to complement systems including Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow. Then, in June 2026, Israel’s Ministry of Defense and Rafael announced the completion of another series of Iron Dome upgrade tests involving scenarios with rockets, UAVs and cruise missiles. Nearly two decades after the Iron Dome project began, the system remains an important part of Israel’s air-defense architecture. But no missile-defense system can eliminate every threat or prevent the human consequences of war. This is the story of how Iron Dome was created, how it evolved through years of conflict, and how the technology of air defense continues to change.
