What happens when following God costs you something?
In Daniel 3, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego are faced with a choice: bow down to the king’s image and fit in with everyone else—or stand for God and face the consequences.
Their response gives us one of the clearest pictures of courageous faith in the Bible.
They tell the king that God is able to save them from the fiery furnace.
But then they say something even more powerful:
“But if not…”
In other words:
Even if God doesn’t do what we hope… He is still worthy.
That is the heart of real faith.
Faith is not saying:
“God, I’ll follow You if You make everything work out.”
Faith says:
“God, I’ll follow You because You are God.”
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego knew God could rescue them, but their obedience was not dependent on the outcome.
They had already decided who they belonged to.
And that matters because pressure will eventually reveal what we really worship.
Babylon says:
Bow down.
Fit in.
Don’t make things awkward.
Do what everyone else is doing.
But these three men decided that their loyalty to God mattered more than their comfort, popularity, safety, or even their lives.
They teach us that:
Conviction is deciding before the pressure comes.
If we wait until the moment of temptation to decide what we believe, compromise becomes a lot easier.
But when we settle it beforehand—
Jesus has my life.
Then even when the pressure rises, we know where we stand.
This passage also reminds us that God is able.
He is able to provide.
He is able to heal.
He is able to rescue.
He is able to change the situation.
But even when He chooses not to do what we expect, His character does not change.
He is still good.
He is still faithful.
He is still worthy of worship.
That is what “even if” faith looks like.
Even if the prayer isn’t answered the way I hoped.
Even if the relationship doesn’t work out.
Even if I don’t make the team.
Even if following Jesus makes me stand out.
Even if obedience costs me something.
I will still trust Him.
I will still worship Him.
I will still follow Him.
Because our faith is not built on getting the outcome we want.
Our faith is built on who God is.
So the question is:
Will you serve God only when it is easy?
Or will you be able to say:
“My God is able… but even if He doesn’t, I still belong to Him.”
