The plate shifter — also called the pullback or plate shifting mechanism — is what separates a manual filter press from a semi-automatic or fully automatic one. Instead of an operator prising open every plate by hand, a shifter carriage travels along the side beam, engages one filter plate at a time, pulls it clear of the pack, and lets the filter cake drop before moving on to the next plate.
