The Taiping Rebellion:One Of The Deadliest War Nobody Knows

The Taiping Rebellion was one of the most devastating conflicts of the 19th century. Beginning in 1850, Hong Xiuquan and his followers attempted to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and establish the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The movement eventually controlled Nanjing for more than a decade and seriously threatened Qing rule. But this was far more than a religious rebellion. Poverty, social conflict, religious belief, political power, the weakening of the Qing state, regional armies, and international interests all played a role in turning the rebellion into a massive and complex war. By the time Nanjing fell in 1864, millions upon millions of people had died—not only in battle, but through famine, disease, displacement, and the destruction of agriculture and local economies. Yet despite its enormous impact on Chinese history, the Taiping Rebellion remains relatively unfamiliar in much of Western popular history.
