Halwai Ka Beta is four Hindi bhajans, about four minutes each and played once through, that tell how Pune's Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati began: not in a temple but at one sweet-shop counter in a Budhwar Peth lane, in 1893, after the plague took the halwai's son. The same six words, तू ही मेरा बेटा, तू ही मेरा देव, are sung in all four on the same Bhoop tune, and each time to someone else: a dead child, wet clay, an idol under a lamp, and the god a whole city now calls its son. The sound stays in one small dry room the whole way. A harmonium leads with its bellows audible, a pakhawaj played with the fingers keeps time, brass taal cymbals and a tanpura drone sit underneath, and one bansuri answers the refrain as the boy's wordless voice. The singer is a plain, slightly hoarse baritone, a shopkeeper who sings at aarti, alone at 60 bpm in the first song; by the last the neighbours are answering the refrain and the lane has carried the pace up to 104. Taraazu Chup Hai opens with the shutter down nine days and the halwai on the step, singing to the empty stool where the boy used to weigh laddoos. Geeli Mitti Mein Beta is midnight in the half-open shop: the guru has told him to make the boy again in clay, and hands that only ever rolled laddoos are shaping Lambodar on the counter. Gali Ka Pehla Mandap is the evening of the first sthapana, the lamp lit under the shop's own awning and the lane arriving with trays of laddoos, the moment what was his became everyone's. Bhor Ki Kataar steps forward a hundred years to the dawn queue at the temple gate, filing past the same counter: nobody in it knows the halwai, and all of them know his son. It is a lyric video, the sung lines timed in Devanagari over four pictures of the one counter. The refrain comes round four times to four different listeners: which of the four is the one you hear it for?
