So a while ago, I was really unhappy with my solo transcription of Paganini's Second Violin Concerto because it didn't feel wholly authentic to the piano. There just wasn't enough left-hand action despite the fact that the orchestral parts were more complicated than I initially beileved them to be. So I did what any sane person does: transcribe it again in the style of a piano concerto/concertante. And this time, it was also a good opportunity to get used to MuseScore, especially considering I wanted to use their strings soundfont since Noteflight doesn't do entire string sections. Not to mention the timpani. Thus, the second piano you see in the video is the actual orchestra and not a piano that plays the orchestral parts. The original version doesn't have a timpani, but I think timpanis are a nonnegotiable addition to any orchestral piece, so I added my own and tried to keep it relatively nonintrusive in case people come after me with pitchforks. In the actual piece, I included multiple nods to Liszt's etude on La Campanella, which you hear in the recapitulation of the main theme in the middle and at the very end. I also included a nod to Kriesler's arrangement of the piece for piano and violin, which serves as a mini-cadenza before the final instance of the main theme. And finally, the ending arpeggios that the piano plays are approximately parallel in structure to the final arpeggios in Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor. I don't think my transcription is too virtuosic, but it does pertain to the qualities and abilities of a pianist while keeping the main themes intact, which was my original goal with this new transcription.
