In August 1947, India became free — and was split in two. Around 15 million people crossed new borders, and hundreds of thousands never arrived. How did a land shared by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs for centuries end up divided?
This episode follows the chain of decisions, fears and mistakes behind Partition: British census and separate electorates, Congress and the Muslim League, Gandhi, Jinnah and Nehru, the Cabinet Mission, Mountbatten's rushed deadline, the Radcliffe Line, the human cost on both sides, and the unresolved question of Kashmir.
Every community suffered in 1947, and historians still debate who and what was responsible. We've tried to tell it fairly. If your family has a Partition story, from either side of the line, please share it respectfully in the comments.
