A 4K walking tour of the live animal and vegetable rows of a highland market in Lao Cai, Northern Vietnam — no narration, no music, only the ASMR ambient sounds of a highland market morning.
Bac Ha market in Lao Cai, Northern Vietnam, is where highland families come to buy the
animals they will raise for the rest of the year.
In this video you walk through the live animal section of Bac Ha market: black pigs
tied in bamboo crates, chickens and ducks passed from hand to hand, buyers lifting a
bird to feel its weight, sellers quoting a price and holding it. A pig bought here this
morning will be carried home on the back of a motorbike and fed for months before it
becomes food. Nothing is sold in a package; everything is alive, and everything is
checked by hand.
From the animals we move into the vegetable rows of Bac Ha market — greens picked the
same morning, sweet potatoes, chayote, mountain herbs, ginger and chilli laid out on
plastic sheets on the ground. This is what a Hmong market in the highlands actually
looks like when the tourists are not the point.
No narration, no music, no staging. Only the real sound of the market: motorbikes,
animals, and people arguing over the price of a chicken.
I'm a local from Vietnam and I film these markets myself. New market every few days.
Which animal at Bac Ha market would you have bought this morning?
