The lyrics were written by Horatio Spafford in 1873 following a series of devastating tragedies. After losing his fortune in the Great Chicago Fire and his four daughters in a shipwreck on the Atlantic, Spafford penned these words while sailing over the very spot where his children had perished. His ability to say "It is well" in the midst of such sorrow has made this song a beacon of hope for over a century.
