The Sloop — The Small Ship That Outran Every Warship Sent After It

🏴‍☠️ Why were pirates so hard to catch during the Golden Age? Because they weren’t fighting the Royal Navy on its terms. In this episode from Piraticles, we trace how the humble Bermuda sloop became the ultimate pirate ship—fast, shallow-drafted, able to sail upwind, and capable of slipping through reefs, sandbars, and hidden inlets where larger warships simply couldn’t follow. While British frigates carried more guns and bigger crews, pirate sloops had the one advantage that mattered most: choice. They could choose when to attack, when to flee, and where the fight would happen. From Nassau’s pirate haven to Blackbeard, Hornigold, Calico Jack, Stede Bonnet, and the Royal Navy’s frustrating attempts to adapt, this is the story of the vessel that helped a few thousand pirates disrupt Atlantic trade for years. ⚓ In this video: • Why pirate sloops outran Royal Navy warships • How Bermuda cedar helped create the perfect raiding vessel • Why shallow draft mattered as much as firepower • How pirates used speed, maneuverability, and geography to dominate • The hidden role of Black shipwrights in building the Atlantic’s fastest ships • How the Navy eventually learned to fight pirates with sloops of its own The most feared pirate weapon of the early 1700s wasn’t the black flag or the cannon broadside—it was a small boat built for trade that pirates used better than anyone else.
