We follow Don José, a soldier who falls in love with free-spirited woman, Carmen. He joins a group of smugglers, and is cast aside when Carmen focuses on bullfighter Escamillo. Driven by anger and jealously, José tracks Carmen down and kills her when she refuses to go to him. This brass quintet arrangement by Geoff Colmer captures different moments throughout the opera. This performance was live in Walter Hall at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music building. It was for the first brass chamber concert of the 2025-26 year. I - Aragonaise (00:04): The prelude to Act IV, setting an energetic, and festive setting for the crowds gathering outside the bullring as they wait for the bullfighters. II - Intermezzo (02:35): A calm moment before Act III, evoking the quiet misty mountains where Don José and the smugglers are hiding. III - Habanera (05:15): A seductive song that Carmen sings, playfully flirting with the many soldiers around her, showing an independent rebellious soul that can never be tamed. IV - Les Toréadors (07:20): Originally the opera's opening overture, and fully realized in Act IV. It's a triumphant march celebrating the arrival of Escamillo, and the other bullfighters as they parade around the arena.
