China's hydrogen steel process could replace the blast furnace. A look at Baowu's Zhanjiang direct reduced iron line, how hydrogen steelmaking works, and what has to be true before it scales. In January 2026, a new line at Baosteel's Zhanjiang plant began making iron with hydrogen instead of coke. More than 80 percent of China's steel still starts in a coal-fed blast furnace running at about 1,500 degrees, and each tonne made that way releases roughly 1.8 to 2.1 tonnes of carbon dioxide. This video follows one heat of steel through the old route and the new one. It explains how hydrogen direct reduction works, why the Rio Tinto and China Baowu trials on Pilbara ore matter, and why a blast furnace is so hard to switch off once it is lit. It then does the sums that press releases skip: the weight of hydrogen one tonne of iron needs, what a full replacement would demand, and how a reported one million tonne a year line compares with China's output of about 960 million tonnes. It also covers Baowu's 2024 warning of an industry winter, the relining calendar that decides when furnaces can really be retired, the power arc furnaces would draw, and the tariff walls that clean steel still has to cross. Figures come from company releases, trade press and industry data. Where a number is my own arithmetic, the video says so, and where no public figure exists, it says that too. The process is real, the scale is small, and the hydrogen source is the open question.
