Master persistent block storage in AWS! Welcome to Episode 49 of our comprehensive AWS course. Following our sessions on EC2 instance connectivity, this episode provides a deep-dive into Amazon EBS (Elastic Block Store)—the primary network-attached storage solution for your virtual servers. In this detailed theory video, we cover everything you need to know about EBS: What is an EBS Volume? Understand Elastic Block Store as a high-performance network drive attached to running EC2 instances. Learn how EBS allows data to persist independently, even after an instance is stopped or terminated. Analogy: Think of an EBS volume as a "Network USB Stick" that you can plug and unplug between servers! Key EBS Characteristics & Features: Network-Based Storage: Because communication happens over the network, minor latency can occur compared to physical local disks. Quick Detach/Attach: Swiftly move volumes between instances for troubleshooting, upgrades, or recovery. Availability Zone (AZ) Lock: EBS volumes are strictly bound to a single AZ (e.g., us-east-1a). A volume in us-east-1a cannot be directly attached to an instance in us-east-1b without first taking a Snapshot. Provisioned Capacity & Billing: You are billed for the total provisioned size (GBs) and IOPS, regardless of how much data is actually stored. Dynamic Scaling: Effortlessly increase drive capacity and throughput over time without downtime. Delete on Termination Attribute: Understand the default behavior when an EC2 instance is terminated: Root EBS Volume: Deleted by default (DeleteOnTermination = True). Additional Attached EBS Volumes: Preserved by default (DeleteOnTermination = False). Learn how to modify this attribute via the AWS Management Console or AWS CLI to preserve critical root volume data upon instance termination. Whether you're studying for AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, SysOps) or designing reliable cloud architectures, understanding EBS volume lifecycle and constraints is mandatory!
