In this video, we try to understand one of the most important questions in human history: Why did agriculture begin? At first glance, agriculture seems like an obvious step forward in human development. However, archaeological evidence presents a surprising puzzle. Many studies suggest that early hunter-gatherers often enjoyed more varied diets, better health, fewer dental problems, and in some cases greater average stature than the first farming communities. This has led some scholars to question whether agriculture was truly an immediate improvement in human life. Jared Diamond famously described agriculture as "The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race" (1987). Other important works that discuss the health consequences and origins of agriculture include Mark Nathan Cohen's The Food Crisis in Prehistory (1977), Paleopathology at the Origins of Agriculture (1984), and Health and the Rise of Civilization (1989). If agriculture initially made life harder for many people, then why did humanity adopt it? Today, there are many competing theories. Some scholars emphasize population pressure, arguing that growing populations forced humans to produce more food. Others focus on climate change, social competition, feasting, hierarchy, religion, or the emergence of political power. In this video, we discuss these theories in detail and examine the evidence behind them. Finally, we turn to some of the most important archaeological discoveries connected to the origins of agriculture and settled life, including Göbekli Tepe, Çatalhöyük, and Jericho. Through these discoveries and the evidence they provide, we try to understand how human societies changed and why agriculture emerged. Rather than presenting a single answer, this video invites viewers to think through the evidence and the competing explanations. The beauty of prehistory is that certainty is rare. We have no written records telling us exactly why people made these decisions. Instead, we have archaeological clues, human remains, settlements, monuments, and artifacts. That uncertainty is what makes the subject so exciting. When we confront questions that do not have definitive answers, we are forced to imagine possibilities, evaluate evidence, challenge assumptions, and cultivate curiosity. The pursuit of answers often matters as much as the answers themselves. What do you think?
