The return trip on the footplate of WHR Garratt 138 downhill from Dinas to Caernarfon on 24 May 1998. At Caernarfon the locomotive runs around its train and then is given a drink at the water tower.
138 was built by Beyer Peacock & Company in Manchester, England in 1958 for the South African Railways.
The Welsh Highland Railway is a 1 foot 11.5 inch gauge railway that has been rebuilt between Caernarfon & Porthmadog in North Wales. It has eight Garratt locomotives seven of which were built for South African Railways and one for the Tasmanian Government Railway.
