Psalm 5: Before the Phone Turns On | Prayer for Your First Ten Minutes | Morning Prayer

Your hand already knows the way to the phone before your eyes are open — and whatever reaches you first sets the mood for the whole day. This morning prayer asks one simple question: who gets to speak to you first? This prayer walks slowly through all twelve verses of Psalm 5, the psalm David prayed before anything else could reach him. It is a prayer for the first ten minutes of your day — before the phone, the radio, the television, or the paper on the step gets the first word — asking that the Lord speak before the headlines, the messages, and the noise of an ordinary morning. It prays for a guarded mouth, a straight path through a hard day, and for the people who will reach for you before you are ready. Whether it is a phone on the nightstand or a paper on the step, let the first word be His.
