Scientists rebuilt a 165-million-year-old insect soundscape — Jurassic cricket and katydid relatives whose wing fossils still encode the songs they made. Most of these calls sat around 5 kHz. One species, Sigmaboilus peregrinus, went ultrasonic (above 20 kHz), long before bats existed.
