We are reminded that God created the world through speech, and each Rosh Hashanah is a new beginning—a time when, so to speak, the world is created again. This is why we must be especially careful not to speak lashon hara, not to hurt others with our words, and not to judge people harshly. Sometimes the very situation we judge in another person can come back to us as a lesson, giving us the opportunity to recognize our own actions. But there is another side to the power of speech: blessing. Instead of speaking badly about others, let us speak goodness. Let us bless one another, encourage one another, and believe that our words can make a real difference. As we enter Rosh Hashanah, may we use our words only for holiness, kindness, blessing, and peace.
