Sometimes, when a man decides to leave a Hutterite colony, he comes to my office first. He wants to know what he is owed. I keep the books, and I have to give him the answer the Supreme Court of Canada gave in 1970. I'm Andreas Wurz, bookkeeper on a Lehrerleut Hutterite colony in southern Alberta. In this video: what a Hutterite actually owns, and the two court cases that tested it. The first ended at the Supreme Court in 1970. The second started with a hog feeder, reached the Supreme Court in 1992, and ended with one branch of our church split in half. INSIDE Why there is no line in a colony ledger with a man's name on it Interlake Colony, the Radio Church of God, and Hofer v. Hofer (1970) "The liberty to bind himself", and the judge who disagreed Lakeside Colony, Daniel Hofer and the hog feeder "He was told he was expelling himself" The Supreme Court's answer in 1992: notice Why winning did not help, and how the Schmiedeleut split What I tell a man who stands at my desk with one bag Tell me in the comments: if you grew up on a place like this and decided to leave, should you be owed a share of what you helped to build? Or is a promise a promise? SOURCES Hofer v. Hofer, [1970] S.C.R. 958 (Supreme Court of Canada) https://www.canlii.org/en/ca/scc/doc/... Lakeside Colony of Hutterian Brethren v.
