Ben Cross did not follow the conventional pathway into elite rugby league. He spent years playing country football, did not make his NRL debut until 24 and carried a sense of imposter syndrome even after earning his opportunity. Yet through persistence, hard work and a willingness to keep proving himself, Ben went on to win an NRL premiership with the Melbourne Storm and represent New South Wales in State of Origin at 29. In this conversation, Ben speaks candidly about the school of hard knocks that shaped him, the 14 surgeries he endured, the ruptured ACL that ended his career and the challenge of rebuilding an identity beyond professional sport. He also shares the coaching principles he now uses to help emerging players develop confidence, discipline, accountability and a genuine sense of belonging. This episode is a reminder that a delayed or unconventional path does not mean you have missed your opportunity. Competence builds confidence, resilience is earned through setbacks, and hard work will rarely let you down.
