DESCRIPTION
Veteran homelessness rarely starts with losing a home. It starts when the support system underneath a veteran disappears.
Bruce Buckley, President and CEO of Soldier On, has spent more than two decades helping build housing and support systems for veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness. In this episode of VET S.O.S., he explains why putting a roof over someone's head is only the beginning—and why long-term stability requires rebuilding the support system underneath them.
IN THIS EPISODE
• Discover why Bruce believes the missing support system is often the critical factor in veteran homelessness—and how pride, broken relationships, mental health challenges, substance use, and financial struggles can accumulate over years.
• Go inside Soldier On's permanent supportive housing model, where veterans receive more than an apartment: furnished units, daily meals, case management, transportation, healthcare coordination, accessible bathrooms, and ongoing support.
• Learn how Soldier On responds when a veteran needs help now. Through the VA-funded Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, teams can use emergency hotel placement while helping veterans find longer-term housing.
• Hear why Soldier On takes services directly to veterans instead of waiting for veterans to find them, using mobile case managers, healthcare navigators, landlord relationships, and veterans with lived experience serving as peers.
• Hear the philosophy behind refusing to give up after relapse. Bruce shares the story of a veteran who has struggled repeatedly with alcohol over roughly a decade while Soldier On continued helping him access treatment without automatically losing his home: “As long as he tries, we try.”
If you or a veteran you know is struggling with housing, this conversation is a reminder that needing help doesn't have to be the end of the story—the right support system can become the foundation for what comes next.
