The UK Is Hiding Something Nobody Talks About On the coast of Yorkshire there's a road that runs to the cliff edge and stops in mid-air. Forty kilometres out in the North Sea, a fishing boat once hauled up a hunter's harpoon. And one end of this island is rising out of the sea, while the other end is going under. The United Kingdom looks settled: small, old and mapped to the last hedge. Then the coast turns out to have no fixed length, London turns out to sit north of Calgary, a straight line from the Tees to the Exe sorts the whole island into wet and dry, high and low, empty and crowded, and the capital turns out to be at the low corner of a slope that is still moving. Thirty facts, counting down, and by number one you'll see why most of them trace back to one thing that was done to this island. If you were in London in the winter of 2013, when the barrier closed fifty times, I want that story too. Subscribe to Under the Atlas for more places that are hiding something.
