He's broken, grief-stricken. He gives up a career in medicine and turns to poetry. He doesn't mary until his late 40's. Then, one day she turns and tells him, 'wow, you've aged!' 😳 How would you respond if you were him? True to Shahriar, he composes a beautiful sweet poem letting her know that although his love for her will live on forever in his heart, the heartbreak has aged him. And being the sweet soul that he is, (or was 😔) he invites her to keep checking in on him.  Although, you'll love that he gets the last word by letting her know that he knows, he's a smart dude, he is aware that all the years he's lost in loyal fidelity to her were a waste.
