Palghat Ramprasad at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan

Palghat Dr. R. Ramprasad is a distinguished Carnatic vocalist renowned for blending tradition, intellect, and innovation. Born into the illustrious Palghat musical lineage in circa 1980, he is the grandson of the legendary mridangam maestro Palghat Mani Iyer and son of eminent violinist T.R. Rajaram. His musical journey began early—debuting at age eight with the Youth Association for Classical Music (YACM) in Chennai, where he won “Best Artist” Ramprasad’s style is deeply rooted in the Ariyakudi–K.V. Narayanaswamy tradition, prized for its rigorous neraval (improvisational) skills. His concerts are noted for lucid shruti, compelling laya (rhythm), and expressive sahitya, traits acclaimed by critics Performances like those at Raga Sudha Hall (Devagandhari and Hamir Kalyani) and the Ramothsava Sangeethotsava in Mysore garnered praise for their structure, emotional depth, and technical finesse Beyond the stage, Ramprasad is also a scholar—a PhD in economics from the University of Georgia and a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard’s School of Public Health He has consulted for organizations like WHO, World Bank, and UNESCO. Marrying his analytic mind and musical vocation, he developed ‘Mani Pravaaham’—an optimization-based app to help artists plan concert repertoire After a hiatus pursuing academia and corporate roles, he re-entered music full-time around 2017, rebuilding his concert career by 2019. In 2019, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Yuva Puraskar for excellence Dr. Ramprasad also leads the Palghat Mani Iyer School of Music in Chennai, continuing his family’s legacy through rigorous teaching.
