Alexandra of Denmark grew up sharing an attic bedroom in Copenhagen, on a father's army pay of £800 a year. In 1863, aged 18, she married the heir to the British throne, and over the next 47 years biographers would conjecture at least 55 liaisons for her husband. She received Lillie Langtry at Marlborough House, spent his 50th birthday in the Crimea in 1891, and buried a son at Sandringham in 1892. On 6 May 1910 she held an oxygen cylinder to the dying King's face, then let his mistress, Alice Keppel, into the room. Why did the Queen open that door?
