Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Yet when a messenger arrived with news that Lazarus was dying, John records one of the most unsettling sentences in the New Testament: "So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was."
By the time Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.
Why would Jesus intentionally delay His arrival to a family He loved? And why does the Gospel of John keep the "fourth day" at the absolute center of the narrative?
In this episode of Beyond Scripture, we investigate John chapter 11 through ancient Near Eastern burial customs, first-century geography, and Second Temple Jewish legal traditions.
We examine:
• The 20-mile climb from Perea across the Jordan to Bethany—and why Lazarus was already dead before the messenger even arrived.
• The ancient rabbinic tradition documented in the Jerusalem Talmud (Yerushalmi Yevamot 16:3) and Genesis Rabbah: why the soul was believed to linger near the corpse for three days, and why Day Four was the irreversible threshold of physical corruption.
• Martha’s panic at the tomb: the biological reality of Mediterranean heat and why "by this time he stinketh" was a plea to protect her brother's remains.
• The deep agitation of Christ: what the Greek term "enebrimesato" reveals about why Jesus wept before performing the miracle.
• The crucial distinction between Lazarus’s mortal resuscitation (bound in graveclothes) and Christ’s immortal resurrection (graveclothes left behind).
• Why this specific sign was the legal tipping point that caused Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin to officially issue Jesus' death warrant.
