15 CREEPIEST Small Towns in Oregon With Dark Histories Locals Don’t Like Talking About #worldside #oregon #creepyplaces #ghosttowns #abandonedamerica #america #forgottenamerica #darkhistory #smalltown
Oregon is famous for dense evergreen forests, dramatic coastlines, mountains, and some of the most beautiful wilderness in America. But hidden behind that natural beauty is another Oregon—one shaped by abandoned mining settlements, failed industries, devastating disasters, strange social experiments, and communities that nearly disappeared from the map.
In this documentary, we explore 15 of the creepiest and most haunting places across Oregon.
The journey begins in Shaniko, once known as the Wool Capital of the World before railroad changes helped turn it into one of Oregon’s most recognizable ghost towns. In Sumpter, the enormous Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge stands as a reminder of the state’s destructive gold-mining era, while Golden, Bourne, and Buncom preserve the remains of pioneer and mining settlements slowly reclaimed by nature.
But Oregon’s darker history is not limited to abandoned towns.
Antelope became internationally known during the Rajneesh movement of the 1980s and one of the most disturbing episodes in Oregon history. Millican became famous for having almost no population at all, while Mitchell carries memories of destructive flash floods.
We also visit Ashwood, historic Baker City, and Portland’s legendary underground stories associated with the so-called Shanghai Tunnels.
Along the coast, Astoria faces the dangerous waters of the Graveyard of the Pacific, while Vernonia carries the scars of lumber decline and repeated flooding.
Deep inside Tillamook State Forest lies Idiotville, a former logging camp almost completely erased by the wilderness.
Finally, we follow Oregon’s Highway 30 corridor between Knappa and Rainier, where old timber communities, abandoned industrial sites, deteriorating docks, and aging buildings reveal another side of the Columbia River landscape.
These places show that beneath Oregon’s spectacular scenery lies a complicated history of ambition, disaster, isolation, and communities left behind.
