Was Mansa Musa really the richest person who ever lived, or has a medieval wealth story become an internet spreadsheet?
This documentary follows the gold, salt, trade routes, pilgrimage, and disputed sources behind Mali’s most famous ruler.
The Catalan Atlas shows Mansa Musa holding gold, but the history of Mali’s wealth was bigger than one man’s private fortune. Explore the West African trade system linking goldfields such as Bambuk and Bure to Saharan salt mines, merchants, tribute, caravan protection, and the market towns that connected Mali to North Africa and the Mediterranean.
We trace Musa’s 1324 to 1325 Hajj through Cairo and Mecca, including accounts of his lavish gifts, a diplomatic protocol dispute with the Mamluk sultan, and the conflicting reports surrounding the size of his caravan. The video also examines why claims that assign Musa a modern dollar value cannot be verified, what Arabic writers actually recorded, and how later stories expanded around his journey.
From Mali’s Islamic networks and architecture to the empire’s slow, multicausal decline, viewers get a source-conscious history of Mansa Musa, his pilgrimage, and the wealth system that made Mali famous.
