Arkiv8 - Inauguration of the Branting Monument / Invigning av Brantingmonumentet (1952) A rare and unique 8mm film showing the inauguration of the Hjalmar Branting monument at Norra Bantorget in Stockholm on June 2, 1952. Hjalmar Branting was Sweden’s first social democratic Prime Minister and a leading figure in the international labor movement, known for steering the country toward democracy and welfare reform. The bronze and granite monument was created by sculptor Carl Eldh (marking his largest and final completed masterpiece) in collaboration with city gardener Erik Glemme. Though the model was finished as early as 1942, the unveiling had to wait a full decade due to World War II. The relief depicts a classic May Day workers' march from the turn of the century, featuring pioneers of the movement alongside Branting, such as August Palm and Axel Danielsson. Prime Minister Tage Erlander gave the keynote speech and officially unveiled the monument, joined by the sculptor Carl Eldh. The film captures the large crowd of spectators and union members with their banners gathered to watch the ceremony. == If you recognize any of the people in the video or have any idea who might have filmed it, please leave a comment below! == #Arkiv8 #HjalmarBranting #SwedishHistory #Stockholm1952 #CarlEldh #TageErlander #ArchiveFootage #8mmFilm #NorraBantorget
