In this episode, we head into Crich Quarry in Derbyshire for a full day of mineral hunting, exploring one of Britain’s best-known historic limestone workings in search of fluorite, calcite and anything else the quarry has been hiding.
The limestone here was laid down around 330 million years ago during the Carboniferous Period, when this part of Britain sat beneath a warm tropical sea. Much later, mineral-rich fluids moved through fractures in the rock, depositing minerals including the fluorite that Crich became famous for.
Quarrying around Crich dates back to the late 1700s, with the main quarry working through much of the 19th and 20th centuries before eventually closing for good in 2010.
We went in expecting fluorite to be the star of the day.
It wasn’t.
Hidden amongst the limestone was an exceptional calcite specimen that completely stole the show — easily one of the standout finds from the trip.
Along the way there’s plenty of exploring, questionable decision-making, ridiculous conversations, some genuinely brilliant British minerals and the usual chaos that seems to follow us whenever we go underground or anywhere remotely dangerous.
This channel is about getting out into the field and showing you where minerals actually come from — quarries, mines, beaches, mountains and forgotten workings across the UK and further afield.
If you enjoy mineral collecting, geology, abandoned places, rockhounding or just watching a group of idiots crawl around looking for shiny rocks, subscribe because we’ve got a lot more coming.
THE CARPÈ CRYSTALS YOUTUBE COMPETITION
We’re giving away £1,000 of Carpè Crystals credit when the channel reaches 1,000 subscribers.
To enter:
1. Subscribe to the channel.
2. Comment “DONE” on one of our YouTube videos or Shorts.
Every qualifying comment counts as an entry.
And keep watching the videos carefully — we’ll occasionally hide a secret code word inside them. Comment that code word as well for an additional entry.
But there’s an even bigger target…
If we reach 5,000 YouTube subscribers before our April Morocco trip, one subscriber will win a place on the trip with us FREE OF CHARGE.
We’ll be heading into Morocco hunting minerals, visiting mining areas, travelling into the desert and doing exactly the sort of nonsense you’ve seen on this channel — except one of you could be coming with us.
You’ll just need your own spending money and any personal travel requirements specified in the full competition terms.
Full competition terms and eligibility requirements apply.
